I Love Manly Men
by Sam Hunter
One of my recent TV addictions is Man Vs. Wild — the Discover show where
ex-special forces guy Bear Grylls jumps out of a plane into the middle of various
nowheres (jungle, ocean, arctic, desert) and then proceeds to find his way back
out to civilization, showing people survival tricks in case they are one of the
wonky tourists who do something stupid and end up out in the desert with no
water, no GPS, no cell phone, or no common sense. Unfortunately, it does seem to
happen.
Some of Bear’s tips are really good — very cool stuff, like how to use heated
rocks to create a warm bed if you have hypothermia (which you can get even in
warm weather if you’ve been in the water too long), how to get out of quicksand
(there’s more of this around than you think, read on…) or various ways of
finding water, starting fire, or building shelter. I just love this stuff, even
though I am so not into camping. What can I say? I have layers. :)
The only time I ever had anything remotely close to this kind of situation was
when Mike and I were kayaking down in the Chesapeake, got caught in a pretty
randy current which slowed us down getting back to our launch spot, and we ended
up hitting the outgoing tide in the middle of a salt marsh. One step out of the
boat — thinking we’d portage — taught us a really quick lesson: don’t get out
of the damned boat. I sank up to my knee and realized this wasn’t a good idea.
Luckily, though I lost a very sporty Teva yanking my leg back out, I was
fortunate not to have sank farther, since I hadn’t yet watched Bear’s show, and
so at that point I wouldn’t have known how to get myself out. Now I know, but I
also know not to get out of the boat.
The nice thing is that with oceans, you know if the water goes out, it’s going to
come back in, so we just had to wait. We had plenty of drinking water, towels,
and even some fritos, so we covered up with wet towels and conducted a nature
experiment, seeing if blue crabs really would eat Fritos — they don’t. When we
did get out, about 4 hours later, we were disgustingly dirty, covered in black
marsh mud, and had a great time — we ran to a local beach and walked through
people, covered in mud and all, right into the water.
Still for all the ups and downs, in the end, I like a guy like Bear more than
city-slicker sophistocates or smooth-chested Gap models. No CEOs for me. I like
guys in jeans and tee-shirts who aren’t afraid to get dirty, whose hands might be
a little rough, and who are ultimately confident and competent whether it’s
fixing a sink or getting you out of the jungle. I like manly men. Bear is
probably at the top of my manly men list at the moment, just under dh, of course.
Who’s your favorite manly man? Tell me, and you could win a copy of my January
book, Untouched.

Wah… the formatting is all messed up. Oh well — hope you can all read it anyway. :) I’ll be in and out, have some stuff going on today, but I’ll come in and chat and look forward to hearing more about your ideas on manly men… ;)

I also enjoy watching Bear
Another manly man that I personally find hysterical to watch is Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs
July 11th, 2007 at 10:54 am
I also like the manly man. Someone whose not afraid to get dirty. The GQ mans not really my thing.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:16 am
Christy, I love Mike Rowe! The episode of Dirty Jobs where he went catfish canoodling was hilarious. And the one where he had to catch snakes so they could be micro-chipped and the contents of their stomachs analyzed….
It was both amusing and slightly disgusting. :puking: He must have gotten bitten a dozen times.
But my favorite manly man is my best friend. He is ex-special forces who is a security contractor in the middle east….like he says, I could tell you where but then I’d have to shoot you :rambo: Like I have never heard that before…. :P
His dream is to ride his Harley, live in a cabin in the middle of 50 acres where he can clean his guns and load ammo in a climate controlled workshop, shoot on his firing range, hunt, fish and only have contact with the outside world at his convenience.
But I guess after spending a year at a time where he is, I can understand the need for peace and quiet.

Well, I like different types of men. In books and movie I adore manly men: strong, stubborn, …:cheerleader:
But in real life, I’m pretty shy. So I like quiet men. Those tall, dark-haired, mysterious quiet men.
July 11th, 2007 at 12:03 pm
I love a manly man. There is nothing like watching a manly man strip off his shirt and seeing him wipe the sweat from his chest and abs.
July 11th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
I love rough tough guys. As a kid, the hot movie stars were macho…the young Sean Connery and Rod Taylor were two of my favorites. I love rugged guys who can make things with their hands. As I type this, my honey is building our new home.
July 11th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
Oh yeah, birds of a feather here, aren’t we? :evil2:
I think a guy looks great dressed up, nice suit, etc., it’s always nice to dress up and go out, so that’s good, too, and I think a lot of them are quiet, in some ways, but at the bottom of it, I think manly men are *capable* and they’re smart, which is huge — they can do stuff, they solve problems, they build and fix and create. . .. I don’t like macho stupid guys, just hard bodies, there’s no attraction there — for me, it’s really about a man who knows how to get things done.

Angie, my husband has security classification of some sort from when he was in the Navy, and when I ask him about some of the stuff, he tells me the same thing “that’s classified” LOL — I mean, he’s serious, but still, it’s kind of fun. I figure it will all be declassified at some point, and maybe then he can tell me. But maybe manly men are the ones who know how to keep secrets, too. :) And there could be a military thing going on here, :)

Samantha,
I have not seen that show. When does it come on? I’d like to check it out. I definitely love a manly, alpha type guy. Like you said, strength and capability are attractive. My favorite real life manly man is my husband. As far as a celebrity, Gerard Butler as seen in 300 comes to mind. Ahh, good memories lol.

Patrick Swayze
Tom Berenger

I love manly men too. My husband is definitely my idea of a manly man. He is not afraid to get sweaty or dirty. He served in the Navy and as a security guard for some years. Now he has a desk job but he works out and tries to keep in shape and is still very sexy to me.
July 11th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Oh, I love that show even though he’s done a few things
that I think I’d rather just give up first lol. My favorite is Mike Rowe with Dirty jobs :shit:. And here I thought I was the only one watching these shows lol. I love his sense of humor and the fact that he is willing to do what he does and I don’t care how much money they offer. My favorite was the show on pigs roflmao. I also love listening to both of their voices. Mike Rowe did the narration on “The Deadliest Catch” - another favorite for manly men lol. Now I’m watching the truck driving series but it’s not as good without mike.

Hi Sam,
I was trying to think of a manly man and then I started reading the comments and Mike Rowe is a great manly man.(My husband is addicted to his show,I’ll blame him for my wondering eyes looking at Mike:movies:) Another of my favorites is Clive Owens, especially when he played King Arthur..Yummy.

Okay, I have to check out Dirty Jobs… :) It’s come up on the Tivo, but we didn’t watch it, depending on the description of what they were looking at, but you all have me curious now. We watched an Urban Survival show last night, and it wasn’t nearly as good, kinda hokey, though the guy was trying to sound like Bear… and he didn’t LOL
Man vs Wild is on Friday at 9 on Discover, though it seems like they run several together we get 2-3 recorded at a time. I am so addicted; I will watch them back to back, LOL.
Yeah, some of the stuff he does is SO gross. Eating the spider in Australia and drinking his own pee was the worst — I could almost ALMOST see the pee drinking, I’d heard of that before with people lost at sea, but eating a spider? NO FREAKING WAY.

Michael Weatherly (NCIS)
John Stamos even tho he acted weird recently in Austrailia

:cheerleader:Congrats Zara

Thank you so much, Samantha! I will email you with my address. I’m going to try to catch the show this week to see what Bear’s all about. It sounds like an awesome show, aside from the whole pee-drinking thing lol.
Thanks for the congrats, Danette!

I love military types, they are so resourceful. I like a hero that can think on his feet and is not afraid to get dirty. Some of the men mentioned so far I do not think would get dirty too often.
July 12th, 2007 at 11:27 am
Well, it depends on the actor or their character — George Clooney and Harrison Ford hit me as guys who can go either way, you know, GQ or rough-tough, but then there are the Johnny Depps or Brad Pitts who are just more, uh… hmmmm… you know. They like to get their manicures. ;) LOL
I’m sorry, but you know, there are just some guys who definitely seem like the complete opposite of manly men to me — not that they aren’t attractive in their own way, but not for me so much…
Mel Gibson while he’s gotten a little weird in his old age, also hits me as a manly guy. John Travolta, I don’t seem him getting his hands too dirty…
Pierce Brosnan, I love him, but I can’t make a call — I think he could be a resourceful guy even though he wears a tux like a second skin, and Hugh Jackman, I don’t know, another close call.

I like Jason from General Hospital. He’s so manly.:fan:
July 12th, 2007 at 7:34 pm
Dirty Jobs, I love that show…:whipnana:
July 12th, 2007 at 9:46 pm
Mine is Josh Holloway as Sawyer on Lost.
Congrats, Zara!
July 13th, 2007 at 8:32 am
Yes, definitely Josh, though my favorite there is Sayid, and I guess that’s because his character on the show really is smart and ruthless, and he does tend to get things done, and have that “survivalist” thing going…

When you asked about a favorite manly man, for some reason my mind didn’t go in the actor direction. I’ll say Carter Osterhaus, who is a carpenter on Trading Spaces, and I THINK he’s done some modeling, too.
July 14th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
OMG, I watched Dirty Jobs last night, the coffee/seal/ostrich farm one, and it was *hysterical* but also yes, Mike’s quite a peach. ;)
Sam
July 14th, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Sean Connery
Cary Grant
James Garner
July 14th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
I started laughing when I saw Mike Rowe’s name mentioned! I too enjoy watching him…umm, I mean the show :) Dirty Jobs. It’s always very interesting!
July 15th, 2007 at 3:13 pm
I like the blue jeans, T-shirt guy also. The one who isn’t afraid of a little hard work or a lot.
